- Riviera dei Ciclopi - Castelmola
Sicily's
second city was founded by the Greeks in early 729 BC. Later the city was
the first to fall to the Romans under which it prospered greatly, many
relics testimony their period of domination. In the modern city there are
some remarkable churches. You will visit Piazza del Duomo with the
Splendid Cathedral of S. Agata 17 th C. and the elegant elephant fountain.
Head to the open air food market where twitching fish eels and shellfish
you might be offered cut open to try. Stroll through the ancient
historical city before heading to our next stop. Drive past the ancient
village of Aci Castello, popular destination for
swimming sunning and snorkeling. A few Km north is Acitrezza a
fishing village setting of Giovanni Verga's 1881 Novel I Malavoglia.
Aci
Castello marks the beginning of the so called Riviera dei CICLOPI that
rises from the sea just beyond the towns. It is said that blinded
Polyfemus slung 3 rocks broken from the Etna at Ulysses as he and his men
escaped from the Cyclops in their ships.
Continue
the ride to Castelmola. Enjoy from this mountain village incredible views
of the bay of Naxos, Etna and Taormina. It is a tiny medieval village with
just one cobbled road and the remains of a old castle .
Visit
the famous bar specialized in frankly phallocentric decors intended to
give the tourists a smile. You have been warned....
